TGSCCC's Statement On Recent Events Against Asian Americans
Seattle, March 20, 2021
The Greater Seattle Chinese Chamber of Commerce (“TGSCCC”) strongly condemns the recent events in violence against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (“AAPI”) communities. We are outraged by the deadly shooting in Georgia and the rising xenophobic discrimination and hate crimes targeted at Asian Americans across the country. We are saddened and grieve for those who suffer from this heinous act.
Hate crimes on Asian Americans have been skyrocketing since the coronavirus pandemic began last year. AAPI members have been attacked, blamed, scapegoated, and harassed. They have been verbally assaulted, physically assaulted, and killed. Hate and violence often hide in plain sight, and it is often met with silence.
Every person in our nation deserves to live their lives with safety, dignity, and respect. We urge the Congress to pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which would expedite the federal government’s response to hate crimes, support state and local governments to improve hate crimes reporting, and ensure hate crimes information is more accessible to Asian American communities.
We stand together with our AAPI community and are committed to be a voice against racism and as an advocate for a more just and humane world. We deserve and demand a better America - an America that is safe for all of its citizens.
